I am thrilled to introduce you to our Middle Years Programme (MYP), where each student's unique journey is at the heart of our educational approach.

At Kongsberg International School, we pride ourselves on being a close-knit community, fostering an environment where every student feels appreciated. Our small school setting allows us to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, where open communication between students, parents, and educators is cherished.

Our MYP is designed to empower young minds to become inquisitive learners, critical thinkers, and compassionate global citizens. We believe in providing a well-rounded education, valuing each subject equally, and encouraging students to explore their passions.

Our dedicated team of educators is committed to nurturing a culture of inquiry-based learning, creativity, and collaboration. We inspire our students to ask questions, engage in meaningful discussions, and take ownership of their learning journey.

As we embark on this exciting educational adventure together, I am eager to witness the growth and development of your child. Our school is a place where positivity, compassion, and encouragement are woven into the fabric of daily life, ensuring that each student thrives academically, socially, and personally.

Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education. Together, we will nurture their love for learning and pave the way for a bright and promising future.

Approaches to Learning
We learn

Helping students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management.

Key and Related Concepts
We study

Helping students explore big ideas that matter.

Global Contexts
We grow

Helping students understand the relevance and importance of their study for understanding their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.

Interdisciplinary Learning
We collaborate

The process where two or more subjects are integrated in a unit to develop new understanding.

Personal Project
We create

Students complete a significant piece of work over an extended period of time, encouraging them to consolidate their learning and reflect on the outcomes of their work.

Service as Action
We care

Service as action is a key component of the MYP, where we emphasize the significance of actively engaging with one's community. Through participation in service as action, students are afforded the opportunity to explore, enact, and contemplate their contributions, facilitating a heightened comprehension of societal challenges and the importance of community involvement.

Learning in the MYP

The Middle Years Programme is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. It comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. The programme helps students develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary understanding. The curriculum framework includes:

KIS Careers Programme

KIS Careers Programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the importance of education, work and lifelong learning.

Students gain knowledge about the education system in Norway and abroad, and opportunities in education and work. They reflect upon their own strengths and interests, and the needs and demands in future society.

During work experience week in Grade 8, 9 and 10, they gain knowledge and hands-on experience of different occupations. In Grade 9 they reach out to a company or organisation of interest and spend a day there interviewing different people about their work.

Students visit career exhibitions in Grade 9 and 10. Grade 9 visit the different programs in upper secondary schools for a day, and Grade 10 students spend two days in upper secondary schools, visiting two programs of their choice. Student are offered individual conversations with careers counsellor twice in Grade 10, and guidance in the application process.

Language and Literature

Through the Language and Literature group, students explore various forms of expression, analyzing and creating works of literature while refining their language skills. This includes the study of literature in both the student's native language and additional languages. Currently, we offer both English and Norwegian as Language and Literature courses. All MYP students take English Language and Literature class, and most of our students also take Norwegian at this level. Norwegian is an essential part of the curriculum, so those students that are not ready to take Norwegian at Language and Literature level are expected to take it as part of our Language Acquisition offerings.

Language Acquisition

In the Language Acquisition group, students develop proficiency in an additional language, aiming for fluency and cultural understanding. MYP Language Acquisition course offerings at KIS include Spanish (which we are proud to have all students participate in for all years of the programme) as well as Norwegian. Norwegian is offered in smaller groups targeting those students whose Norwegian proficiency is not yet at the level where they would be able to participate in the Norwegian Language and Literature course.

Mathematics

Mathematics provides a foundation for logical thinking and problem-solving skills. In this group, students engage with mathematical concepts and apply them to real-world situations, developing both computational and analytical abilities. In the MYP, mathematics courses emphasize both inquiry and application, equipping students with problem-solving techniques applicable beyond the classroom. At KIS, the mathematics curriculum is designed to engage and motivate students by presenting real-world examples that demonstrate the relevance and utility of mathematical principles. We aim to inspire students to explore mathematics confidently and apply it to novel situations, thereby cultivating a deeper understanding of its practical applications.

Sciences

With inquiry at its core, the MYP sciences framework is designed to empower students to explore issues both independently and collaboratively through research, observation, and experimentation, always highlighting the connections between science and everyday life. Scientific inquiry within the MYP sciences curriculum nurtures critical and creative thinking in research and design processes, while also encouraging students to identify assumptions and consider alternative explanations. Through these investigations, students cultivate an appreciation for diverse perspectives, hone ethical-reasoning skills, and strengthen their sense of responsibility as members of both local and global communities. At KIS, this subject group is offered throughout a combined sciences course which includes elements of chemistry, biology, physics, and environmental science.

Individuals and Societies

Individuals and Societies encourages students to explore human behavior, societies, and their histories. This subject explores many aspects including history, geography, economics, and anthropology, fostering critical thinking and global awareness. From understanding human history, questioning where and how narratives are created, to participating unique opportunities such as participating in Model United Nations, students are afforded the chance to actively explore and analyze historical, geographical, political, social, economic, and cultural factors shaping societies on both macro and micro levels.

By immersing themselves in these inquiries, learners gain a profound understanding of the intricate interplay between individuals and the societies they inhabit. They develop the skills necessary to navigate and contribute meaningfully to an ever-evolving global landscape.

Arts

The arts in the MYP aim to ignite imagination, challenge perceptions, and foster both creative and analytical skills. We encourage students to explore the contextual and cultural significance of artworks, nurturing an inquiring and empathetic worldview. Within the MYP, we value the processes of creating, performing, and presenting artwork, providing students with opportunities to both express themselves artistically and grow as learners. Through artistic expression, students learn to convey feelings, experiences, and ideas about the world, honing their techniques and creative skills along the way.

The arts group encompasses visual arts as well as performing arts. During their first two years of the MYP (MYP A and MYP B) our students participate in a combined arts course. Beginning their third year in the MYP, KIS students are given the choice to specialize in either visual or performing arts, allowing students to pursue artistic expression through their chosen artistic lense.

Physical and Health Education

Physical and Health Education promotes holistic well-being by encouraging physical activity, healthy living, and personal development. Through this group, students learn the importance of leading an active lifestyle and maintaining a balanced approach to health. Our PHE programme is heavily based on our unique surroundings and nature, providing students a wide range of exciting units ranging from rock climbing and skiing to ice fishing and hunting.

Design

In the Design group, students engage in practical problem-solving and innovation. This involves using technology and creativity to design solutions for real-world challenges, fostering a mindset of innovation and entrepreneurship. KIS currently offers a combined Product/Digital Design curriculum which allows students to develop their skills in designing and creating solutions for authentic problems. This includes aspects of programming, robotics, 2D and 3D design, as well as web site authoring and others.

One of the fundamental aspects of the MYP curriculum is its eight subject groups, designed to provide a comprehensive and well-rounded education for students aged 11 to 16. The eight MYP subject groups are outlined below, including information on how they are specifically approached at our school.
